The Course of True Love Never Did Run Smooth

Top Heartwarming 10 Facts about Love

What is love? This question has continually baffled the billions of people on this earth. Throughout time, there have been numerous perspectives, opinions, and argumentation regarding the true definition of love. Is it a product of chemical reactions in our brain? Or is it an emotion from the deepest part of our souls? Whatever your answer may be, there is one thing for sure: “The Course of True Love Never Did Run Smooth”.

The path of searching for true love is never easy, nor it is a smooth one. Throughout centuries, this very idea has been encapsulated in various literary texts, such as the Odyssey and Midsummer’s Night Dream. Both of those renowned literary works elaborate on the notion that the course to true love was never smooth.

Odysseus’ defeating the suitors in Ithaca.

In the Odyssey, Odysseus seeks to return to Penelope, his wife. The power of their love is continuously challenged and tested throughout the book. For instance, Odysseus overcomes his superficial feelings for the nymph Calypso and yearns for the true love of Penelope. He travels through unforgiving storms, the deaths of his comrades, and countless other miserable events to reunite with his true love Penelope. Odysseus’ course of true love is filled with unimaginable suffering and pain. Meanwhile, with the absence of Odysseus, Penelope is powerless when she faces the suitors who wish to take her hand in marriage. She concedes and allows the suitors to enter her estate, kill her cattle, and feast as they wish. Despite all the barriers that hindered them, they manage to once again reunite. Although all the events in Odyssey are fictitious, they serve as a useful metaphor in describing the course of true love. Every relationship has its storms, whether it be an disagreement on a certain issue with your partner or even an altercation. The path of true love is not filled with all flowers and candy; it is an arduous one.

Another instance of the complex course of true love is Midsummer’s Night Dream. The complicated relationships between Hermia, Lysander, Helena, and Demetrius conveys the entangled nature of the course of true love. In MSND, the journey of each of the characters is filled with a collection of emotions, ranging from infatuation to even hatred. The interaction between people in MSND is best described as a “riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma”. Despite the intricacy of the relationships, in the end, all is well. Hermia ends up with Lysander, while Helena with Demetrius.

Napoleon Bonaparte, arguably the greatest military leader of all time, also had a tempestuous course of true love. Several days after his marriage with Josephine, he embarked on a military campaign to conquer Italy. Josephine, his infidel wife, had an affair with a lieutenant in the French army when Napoleon was absent. Napoleon was furious, and he retaliated by having an affair of his own. After he knew Josephine was unable to bear a child, Napoleon divorced her. Subsequently, he married Marie-Louise of Austria, who gave birth to Napoleon’s first child. Despite all the disloyalty Josephine had displayed, Napoleon’s last words to his true love were: “France, l’armée, tête d’armée, Joséphine”, or France, the army, the head of the army, Joséphine (businessinsider.com).

Although literary works provide substantial evidence to back up the claim that the course of true love is never smooth, it is not complete without a personal story.

“When writing a personal story of what it means to be alive, a person is simply replicating on paper the universal story that all human beings share.”
― Kilroy J. Oldster (goodreads.com)―

Matthew Njam’s story: I have a story about a “storm” in my relationship with my girlfriend. I will give a nickname for my girlfriend: let us say she is Miss J.  So one day, I just got back from school. I received a message from Miss J., and she was wondering why I didn’t text her after school. Then, as soon as I arrived home, I quickly rushed to my computer room to play games. I was in my own “world” as I played for around 2 hours. After that, I did my homework and projects.  I completely forgot to text her. After several hours, she suddenly called me. As my phone rang, I started to panic and frantically held my phone. When I picked up the phone, she yelled at me so loudly that I had to move my phone away from my ears. She shouted, “Where have you been?!” I replied, “Sorry, I was playing my games and doing my projects.” She said, “Fine, just go date your games then!” She hung up. Since then, I have always texted her back directly after the school. I truly regretted my actions on that day.

We do not live in a utopia where the course of true love is as easy as pie. In life, there must be a realization that everyone has flaws, including you and your partner. There is no way out of this imperfect world. Conflicts may, and will inevitably arise in your relationship. But what matters is that you embrace all your flaws and your partner’s flaws. That is the key to true love. For true love will persist in adversity, only if there is acceptance.

A Peculiar Dream

Dreams

“Dreams are the stories our brains tell while we’re sleeping—they’re a collection of clips, images, feelings, and memories that involuntarily occur during the REM (rapid eye movement) stage of slumber. We typically have multiple dreams per night that grow longer as sleep draws to a close.” (Psychology Today)

Why do we dream? The answer to this question has been explored throughout the centuries, but no conclusive answers have been discovered. Nevertheless, people continue to use dreams to gain insight into their lives.

In Midsummer’s Night Dream, the theme of dreams is evident in the book. In fact, there are 16 references to dreams in the book. For example, in Act 2, Scene 2, lines 1-160, Hermia had a dream in which a serpent, a symbol of betrayal, was consuming her heart. Subsequently, Hermia was frantic when she woke up, as Lysander was no longer present beside her. In this blog, we will elaborate on another strange dream our group member Matthew experienced, and its other aspects such as its significance, relation to his life etc.

Matthew: I had a dream in which I woke up in a futuristic city with sophisticated technology.  There were majestic flying buildings and cars. As I was walking around, out of nowhere, I received an unknown source of power from a glowing diamond. When I touched it, I possessed special abilities. I gained the ability to fly, had unimaginable strength, and I had lustrous body armor. However, Matthew became arrogant and started showing off his power to his friends. I kept flying higher and higher up to the sky. I reached the outermost part of the earth’s atmosphere. Suddenly, I lost my power, and started free falling to the earth. I collided with the ground, and I was severely injured.

Every dream has its own meaning. In my opinion, this particular peculiar dream is trying to remind me to stay humble. Ironically, the fate I had in the dream was similar to the fate I experienced in real life. When I joined IICS, I proudly selected the notorious triple science subjects (Biology, Physics, and Chemistry) in school for my electives. I thought that I could ace all the subjects easily. But I was completely mistaken. I failed all of my electives, including Commerce. I felt devastated due to this huge failure. I was depressed, and lost hope in myself. I struggled to reach for the light in the end of the tunnel. I was drowning in sheer sadness and depression. Those were gloomy times. I contemplated on my failure for quite awhile. I asked questions to myself, and asked God, “Why does this has to happen?” Then I realized the damage arrogance has inflicted in my life. Arrogance is truly monstrous, and it has gotten the best of me. Therefore, I committed myself to stay humble and cast away my arrogance. In addition to that, I commit myself to put maximum effort on all of the tasks given to me at school.

Football Transfer Window of Summer 2018

“Soccer is a magical game” -David Beckham-

We live in a dynamic world, where everything changes. The summer transfer window of 2018 is one of the most dramatic transfer window the world has ever seen.

One of the biggest shocks in the summer 2018 is the transfer of the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid to Juventus. The star, arguably one of the best players in the world, has won 4 Champions League trophies in the past 5 years. He has had countless trophies during his fantastic 9 years playing for Madrid. But it simply was not enough to prevent the superstar from leaving. In his open letter to the fans, he stated that he was ready to enter a new stage in his career. Rumors have circulated, and several rumors have indicated that Ronaldo has an unpleasant relationship with Florentino Perez, the club president.

Besides that, the tax fraud lawsuit by the Spanish government made him even more eager to move to Juventus. Juventus has reportedly agreed to a transfer value of EUR 105 million. Definitely, it costs a lot to bring such a legend to Juventus, but as the costs are great, I believe the rewards are greater. Even though Juventus has won many Serie-A titles, in two decades, they have failed repeatedly to take home the prestigious Champions League trophy. Ronaldo may the perfect player to bring Juventus the much envied trophy. Played together with Dybala, the duo poses a huge risk to the opponent’s defense. Besides that, Ronaldo’s signing may be beneficial for Juventus’ financial situation as well. In the first 24 hours of the signing, Juventus sold a mind-blowing EUR 60 million worth of Ronaldo’s jersey. Ronaldo’s signing may also be the perfect boost to further increase Juventus’ earnings through commercial deals with sponsors.

The English Premier League, on the other hand, has brought in many top players from around the world into the league. Even though the transfer window closes early, we have already seen a lot of major transfers happening in the Premier League. Many Premier League clubs have brought in many players to bolster their squad for the upcoming season, while some only brought in one to three players into their squad. The most prominent team in this transfer window according to me is Liverpool. Their transfer business this season has seen Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita (whose deal was already done last season), and Shaqiri all penned a deal.

Even though there were only four players who were brought in, but all of them were needed in their squad for the upcoming season. Alisson, who impressed many last season due to his rising performance, was bought for a world record fee for a goalkeeper, £65m. Many people thought that that price for a goalkeeper was too high, but the fact that both Mignolet and Karius failed miserably during their stint at Liverpool last season gave an excuse for that price. Fabinho, bought at the fee of £40m, is also worth the price, since Liverpool haven’t had a pure holding midfielder since the era of Xabi Alonso. Keita will also improve Jurgen Klopp’s squad strength for the upcoming season and also Shaqiri can be a really good backup for either Salah or Mane.

Arsenal, in my opinion, also had a good transfer window. After their long-serving manager, Arsene Wenger, retired, they signed Unai Emery from PSG. The signing of Emery soon followed with the signing of several veterans and also some youngsters. Lichtsteiner, Sokratis, and Leno are among the new names Emery brought in into the squad. Brought in at a fee below £20m each, I think it is a really good deal since Sokratis and Leno played crucial parts with their team last season. Both players, along with Lichtsteiner will surely improve Arsenal’s defence last season.

Some more teams who have a good transfer window this summer are Fulham, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and West Ham United. All three teams, two of them are newly-promoted teams, have at least signed one marquee signing. Fulham signed Jean Michaël Seri who was targeted by Barcelona, Wolves signed João Moutinho for a fee of only £5m, while West Ham signed Felipe Anderson for £33.5m. I personally think that West Ham, who were nearly relegated last season, may rack up points and move up to the mid table, while Fulham and Wolverhampton may have a higher chance of surviving in the Prem. On the other hand, I see Tottenham Hotspurs as the worst team in the transfer window. Tottenham have not signed anyone yet this transfer window even though the fans’ expectations are very high for the club to sign a player.

In conclusion, this summer transfer window has been fantastic for many teams, but rather unsuccessful for some. Let us look forward for what the football teams has in store for us when the season starts.
